Chargers coach Mike McCoy has been a big believer in the defensive line and its potential, so much so that he brought it up to his players during training camp, according to multiple sources.
The line is a big part of the Chargers offensive success.
It ranks first in yards allowed per game, fourth in sacks and fifth in quarterback hits allowed.
“We’re going to be in the position to get some big plays and get some touchdowns, but I think that’s the key,” McCoy said.
“If we don’t have any pressure or can’t do anything, that’s a lot of points.”
It will be up to the defensive front seven to continue to play up to its potential.
They’ve had a lot to prove since losing veteran defensive end Brandon Flowers in free agency last offseason.
However, they still have to learn how to play together as a unit and figure out the defensive scheme.
That will take time and work.
The Chargers lost three starters from the 2013 team that had the best defense in football.
With Flowers gone, there were questions about the future of the secondary, as well.
Now the defense has the potential to be one of the better units in football, but the questions will be about how the defense is playing right now.
There are questions about whether the unit will be ready to play against the Broncos, who rank first in total defense, but McCoy believes they’ll be able to put together a performance.
“I think we have a good group of guys,” McCoy told reporters on Wednesday.
“I think it’ll be a challenge for us, but we’ll come through it.”
The defense has been ranked No. 1 for most of the season and is the Chargers top-ranked unit in the NFL.
McCoy said he didn’t expect the Chargers to get beat by Denver in the regular season.
But the defense struggled against the Packers and Steelers last season, which hurt their chances of winning the division.
It’s also unclear if the unit has the best quarterback in the league in Philip Rivers.
In fact, according the ESPN Stats & Info site, he’s the No. 2 overall QB in the NFC.
For now, the Chargers defense is the top-rated unit in football and has been for the past four weeks.
